Professional Organizations

An organization that is available for all communication professionals is the American Communication Association . “ACA is committed to enabling the effective use of new and evolving communication technologies to facilitate instruction, research, and criticism ; it offers a technologically-supportive venue for all who study the ways in which humans communicate”(American Communication Association, 2010).  ACA offers tools to help qualified professionals accomplish tasks and excel in the communications field, and it is for anyone who is interested in communicating; You don’t have to be a communication major to join. Even so, it is designed for students, professor and entrepreneurs in the communications field. However, other professionals or students could benefit from this organization, because most professionals and students deal with Human Communications on a regular basis.
Another Organization available to all communicators is the National Communication Association. This association is designed to reach all types of audiences. For example, it is for researchers, and professionals dedicated to human communications. Also, this association is for educators interested in improving their communication skills. Furthermore, the purpose of this organization is to publish information about communication studies, and to hold meetings and conventions for all types of professionals, educators or researchers.” NCA contributes to the greater good of education and society” (National Communication Association, 2010). Finally, NCA is good for anyone interested in keeping up to date with new publications about  communication studies.
Also, the International Communication Association is for Scholars or teachers interested in the communication field. However, I C A also focuses on publishing information about communication. So, anyone who wants to receive this information can become a member of the International Communication Association. For example, the association publishes “the Communication Yearbook and five major, peer-reviewed journals: Journal of Communication, Communication Theory, Human Communication Research, the Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication, and Communication, Culture, and Critique (International Communication Association, 2006). Finally, this association is also designed for sharing  knowledge and information about the communication field for an international audience.
The next organization that is available to all communicators is The Society for Technical Communications. “Its 14,000 members include technical writers and editors, content developers, documentation specialists, technical illustrators, instructional designers, academics, information architects, usability and human factors professionals, visual designers, Web designers and developers, and translators”(Society for Technical Communications, 2010), but it is also designed for anyone who is interested in this field. Additionally, this organization is to keep professionals up to date with the field of technical communications, and to improve their technical writing skills.
The final organization I reviewed is the International Public Relations Association, this organization is available to anyone interested in Public Relations. However, it is designed mainly for PR or communication professionals. Furthermore, the purpose of this association is for networking or to improve public relations and communication skills. For example, “IPRA’s global conferences and regional meetings”( International Public Relations Association, 2010) are essential for improving these skills, and for networking as well.
